Niyi Osundare is a Nigerian poet, playwright, essayist, and scholar. He has authored over 18 books of poetry, two books of selected poems, four plays, two books of essays, and numerous scholarly articles and reviews. Among his many prizes are the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Poetry Prize, the British Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the Noma Award, which is the most prestigious Book Award in Africa, and the Fonlon/Nichols Award for "excellence in literary creativity combined with significant contributions to Human Rights in Africa". He was the 2014 recipient of the Nigerian National Order of Merit, (NNOM), Nigeria’s highest award for distinguished creative and intellectual achievement. He is currently a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of New Orleans in USA, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.
