[Writers in Conversation] It Was Just a Joke—Or Was It?

We are going to talk about the linguistic strategy of the joke today. If a cutting joke is like a much-needed rain falling on this arid life, a conversation about jokes may be wearisome and heavy like a monsoon. Yet without things like heaviness, sadness, and suffering, there would be no such thing as jokes to cut through it all in the first place. We happily savor that moment of uplift, but perhaps what we are truly up against then is something like the gravity that has been pulling at us for far longer. While recognizing pain, sorrow, and oppression, we hope to kick away all that gravity for a moment with an upbeat conversation and explore the strategies of writers who have confronted the invisible oppressions of this world. Join Swedish novelist Jonas Hassen Khemiri and Korean poets Shim Bo-Seon and Hwon Lee. Together with the power of lighthearted laughter, we will share the truths hidden within a joke. • Language: Korean, English
